Happy 4th of July (and fireworks)!

I have been visiting my hometown of Kansas City to celebrate the fourth of July. Today we went fireworks shopping which is a tradititon here. I love all the graphics on the packaging. Tomorrow we will go to my brother's who hosts a big celebration. Hope everyone is relaxing and enjoying the holiday weekend!

Necklaces coming soon.

I have been crocheting many necklaces trying to get them updated in the shop this week. I'm hoping for tomorrow. I've made all different lengths and colorways. It's fun making up the tiny doily patterns.

Weddings issue out!

Quick update: the MS Weddings issue with our wedding is officially out (at least in NYC).

Ben was able to pick up a copy at the news stand near his work yesterday. He had visited MANY times waiting for it. See below post for more info and pictures from the wedding.

Also a nice mention of it yesterday on Apartment Therapy.

Lines and Shapes

Well the new Lines and Shapes is out and I'm happy to announce I am contributor this time. The theme is Thread, which is right up my alley as you can imagine. If you aren't familiar with the book series, you can read about it here. It's quite inspiring to see how different artists approach the same theme. Thanks to Lena and Mav for asking me to participate!

A few things Japanese

One day last week I wasn't feeling well so I sat on the sofa and worked on Shashiko embroidery. I've always wanted to try it and I found it very quick and satisfying as far as embroidery goes. I bought a kit at City Quilter but they sell similar ones at Purl. Purl also did a nice tutorial. I ended up making two pillows, one out of the Shashiko and another with some woven fabric I bought at Habu Textiles (the thin stripes). I love the subtle shades of blue in the stripes.

My friend Leigh just back from a trip to Japan. She brought me back these sweet items from Loft and Uniqlo, totally my colors and aesthetic. Thanks Leigh!

Happy Friday!

Thanks to everyone who has left such sweet comments about our wedding. Even while the planning was going on it was hard not to post photos or updates. It was worth it though now to show everyone and have it be a surprise.

One thing that I'm not sure made it into the story (still haven't seen it in print yet!) is the corsages and boutinneires that I made from vintage flowers and leaves. I had so much fun making them, the tiny bouquets. I tried to come up with ideas I could do myself ahead of time that would last. I got most of the flowers at D Blumchen and Tinsel Trading. I also went to Dulken and Derrick and bought vintage stock when it was closing it's store. They now have an online shop.

The wait is finally over...

We have been waiting over a year to post photos of our wedding. It was really hard to keep a secret. Well, the Martha Stewart Weddings summer issue is soon to be out with our wedding. The photo gallery is here.

We have such fond memories of the day and I was happy to be able to add so many craft and handmade touches. It really was a special day. More photos here. Our photographer was Jacob Pritchard who did such an amazing job.

Once Wed did a nice post on the wedding too!

We had a nature theme and got married in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. I love the woodland scenery. Gerald Menke (pictured below) played solo during the ceremony the band The Dixons played old time country music at the reception.

I made my bouquet out of silk butterflies, some of which I repainted in coordinating colors. Hannah Milman made the bridesmaids bouquets from scented geraniums, daisies, sweet pea and other flowers.

WD104082_52 We rode away on white bikes complete with "Just Married" flags. Ben worked so hard on finding just the right bikes. We then rode all the way home through Brooklyn with people cheering for us the whole way. It was magical.

NJ antiquing and camping

This past weekend we took a quick road trip to New Jersey and Pennsylvania to go antiquing and camping. The camping was fun but it rained most of the evening and during the night we had a big thunderstorm. I, being a totally novice camper, was scared but Ben slept through the whole thing! It was fun to cook dinner over the fire, which held up despite the intermittent rain. We camped at Bull's Island Recreation Area, a NJ state park. Now if we only had a place other than the bathtub to dry off our muddy wet tent!

The definite highlight of antiquing was Fritz's booth at the Tomato Factory. Fritz is collecting editor at Martha Stewart Living so I was dying to see his wares. He works on Sundays too so it was great to see him. I highly recommend visiting. Even just to see the way he organizes and displays everything. A little while back his office was shot for an issue of Living, I love the ordered chaos.

Here is a google map of the antique stores, coops and flea markets I recommend from this trip. Also each of these towns has other little shops that can also be great.

Because of the rain everything was very lush and green.

Etsy shop update.

Hi,

I have updated my Etsy shop with several different items today. Please stop by and take a look!

It's stopped raining here in Brooklyn so I think I'll take the opportunity to get outside and run some errands. Might have to take a detour through the park too!
